Since a great deal of the people responding to this post seem to have missed the point completely, I’ll reword it: I’m not making fun of survivors. If anything, I’m making fun of rapists. I’m not implying that the holocaust and rape are the same thing, but what an admirable example of putting words in my mouth.
And most importantly, I’m not ordering you to find a subject funny when you don’t, nor am I trying to guilt you into doing so. Humor is subjective, and I’ve explained myself and my laughter. Feminists and survivors alike have every right to be angry at me, just as I have every right to not be losing sleep over this.
Laughter and comedy giving you personal power is moot if it degrades those who have been harmed by sexual assault. Find whatever you want funny, but if you open your mouth and a rape joke pops out when I- a survivor- is in the same room what you’re telling me is that my personal trauma and experience is laughable. That it’s comedy fodder, and that the possibility of my being triggered isn’t as important as you getting a laugh.
1 out of every 6 American women and 1 in 33 men has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime, are you comfortable enough with those odds to potentially damage a person to enjoy a rape joke?
