This actually makes me really upset. This is unnecessary, the original short film was amazing to me, it was perfect, why couldn’t he just leave it alone. I’m sure most people wont agree with me but i really don’t care, this sucks.

No. What you said to me is upsetting. Haven’t you ever wanted to go back and change something you weren’t happy with UNTIL you were happy with it? It may just be an ~artist~ thing but I like redoing old pieces, I love seeing how far I’ve come, and more importantly I love improving on what I think needs to be improved on. Because at the end of the day this is who matters most when it comes to my personal pieces, pieces I did for enjoyment, me. Nothing makes me more upset than looking back on something old I’ve done that everyone thinks is wonderful but I think is shitty, and then I get guff when I try to make it better by my standards.
If you think the original is perfect and wonderful and you’re already dismissing the re-make on the basis that it’s ~not the original~, fine. This s your opinion and your prerogative and I’m not going to chastise you for it. But don’t ask silly questions like “why couldn’t he just leave it alone”. This is his work, his baby. And if he wants to go back and make the improvements he felt it needed then by gosh I’m going to stand by that decision.
OK Nina but no one said this directly to “you” so you’re statement “what you said to me” doesn’t make sense. I think you meant, In my own opinion, what you said is upsetting. As an artist you can absolutely have the opinion that an artist should be able to go back and fix the problems they see with the piece. I think Mere and I are both agreeing that we had specific childhood experiences with the film, thus the memories attached to the film are unique from your opinion. No one in this situation is RIGHT or WRONG and everyone is entitled to how they feel. Personal experiences are valid and I don’t think you can discredit childhood experiences. Furthermore, there is no point of arguing about this on tumblr when Tim Burton is going to do as he pleases and is obviously remaking the film into a claymation piece. However, that still does not mean people absolutely cannot have conflicting views about it.
I’m sorry, grammar there. It should have read: “what you said, to me, is more upsetting”. I’m at work so I’m typing these out fairly fast. I meant that their words were more upsetting than the remake.
And I said that I wouldn’t chastise either of you for your opinions- right there, second sentence of the last paragraph. Never said I was right and your opinions were wrong. What I did say was “don’t ask silly questions like ‘why couldn’t he just leave it alone’”. Because that is a very, very silly question when dealing with art and artist- and I mean that in all forms of art too.
And I wasn’t arguing. I was bringing up a counter-opinion, something anyone who post or says their opinion in a public forum best be ready for, and something OP seemed to be ready for with the “I’m sure most people wont agree with me but I don’t really care”. Don’t discredit my voice or opinion by saying “well, Burton’s gonna do what he want anyway”, because that fact hardly stopped you or OP from forming opinions about it.

Look, someone else who doesn't know me! I HAVE taken the classes. I HAVE read the books. I was simply advocating for intelligent discussion and everyone turns violent. Cool. Now it's your turn to sit down and stop assuming you know me.
Lol. I never said anything about you in particular. I was using “you” in the generalize “you all”, or directed to any reader. If you noticed throughout the post I say “these butts” indicating more than one and “they” indicating multiple. This isn’t solely about you as, like you said, I don’t even know you.
And my point still stands. I don’t owe anyone an intelligent discussion. I don’t owe anyone an education. I’ve done it multiple times, and I’ve seen other tumblrs do it. The information is out there, if you really wanted to learn you would learn. It’s not like I was taught this overnight by some magnificent force bestowed upon those who come from oppressed groups. No. I looked shit up, and I got myself some learnings.
I am sick and tired of teaching people, it’s not my job. If I’m approached in a respectful way that’s completely different but I do not take kindly to the dichotomy of ~TEACH ME OR YOUR POINT IS INVALID~ or ~TEACH ME OR YOU’RE JUST ANGRY AND EMOTIONAL~ which is what I normally come across.

I carefully worded that post to try and avoid this. I said FIRST try intelligently explaining things. If at FIRST you don’t succeed, tell someone to STFU. Or just stop talking to them. Isn’t being a reactionary and saying something extreme and reactionary just as bad as the ignorance? It only serves to further distance the person.

Also, there are chunks of important info that are out there for you to learn the same as anyone else. It not necessarily anyone’s responsibility to tell you more than “what you just said was fucked up”. Figure it out.
